Kingdom Hearts, "Surface Appearances" (Roxas+Demyx)

He keeps seeing that boy, over and over again. Roxas has to wonder who he is, and why he dreams about him; but on some level he's aware that there's an easy explanation, if not for one small things...
Contains Roxas and Demyx interaction, amnesia Roxas forever, and avid discussions about hair. Written for the [community profile] fic_promptly prompt, "Xion or Roxas, someone else's memories and someone else's face".

.surface appearances.
The question had been weighing on his mind for a while, but it was a subject that Roxas didn't feel comfortable simply asking about. He hadn't spoken to anyone about his visions yet -- he'd been meaning to ask Xion about them, but somehow it always slipped his mind when they were together. He could ask Axel just about anything, but he had seen how quickly Axel tended to clam up and get standoffish when asked about his human life. He doubted he would get helpful information from him.

In fact, he had observed that most Nobodies didn't like to talk about their human lives. But there was one Nobody that he thought might not mind.

"Hey, Demyx," he said, slowing in his tracks. "Can I ask you something?"

Demyx turned back to face him, shifting his grip on his sitar. "Well, sure! The alternative is actually doing work. What's up, Roxas?"

He grinned so readily. Roxas paused for a beat longer, glancing over the darkened and crooked scenery of Halloween Town. "What did you look like -- when you were human?"

He wasn't sure what response to expect -- maybe a slip in Demyx's good cheer, or maybe nervousness at the prospect that stricter Nobodies might hear them somehow -- but if anything, Demyx brightened. "Seriously, you want to talk about that, too? I thought I was the only one who isn't pretending I don't know the guy." He let the sitar rest against the ground and put his other hand on his hip. "You know, when I was first born, I used to ask people to call me Medy all the time. They must've told me the reason why I'm not supposed to go by that anymore, like, a hundred times. You can call me Medy, if you like." Demyx paused a beat, and then said, "Actually, that sounds kind of weird to me now. Oh, man! They finally wore me down. After all these years I don't even recognize my own name anymore."

The flow of words came fast and good-natured, and Roxas eyed Demyx dubiously. "I asked what you looked like," he reminded. He had no intention of calling Demyx by a human name.

That successfully derailed Demyx. The taller Nobody hunched in, head tilting thoughtfully. "What I looked like? Well -- like this, mostly. I mean, my hair was different."

"Your hair was different," Roxas repeated slowly. He thought of the boy in red, with his wild brown hair.

"Well, yeah. Actually, I used to change my hair a lot when I was Medy. I really liked that last hairstyle -- I had it razor-cut short all around, but longer on top, so that I could comb it forward, like this... I've let it grow out since then, so now it's longer in the back and on the bottoms, and I gel the top straight up, of course."

He was using helpful hand gestures to attempt to convey how this hairstyle had looked. Roxas frowned. "But you had blond hair then, too?"

"Of course. This is all natural, my friend." Demyx grinned at him, and then added, "Well, I used to dye it. Medy, that is. Even wore it pink for a while! Heh, and one time I dyed it blue, that was right after Luxord joined, and Xaldin got super uptight about it. Told me he'd shave my whole head if I didn't fix it. That guy wouldn't know fun if it bit him in the butt, seriously."

"So... you don't look any different, as a Nobody. Just surface things you could change whenever you felt like it." Roxas looked down.

The boy in red -- he could never see him very clearly, never had a clear impression of him. But he definitely had wild brown hair, and more of it than Roxas. They couldn't be memories of his human life if he would've looked the same as a human as he did now. Roxas couldn't say if he was disappointed or not.

It finally seemed to occur to Demyx that there might be a reason why he was asking, and he straightened out a little. "Well... Yeah. As far as I know. Why? What did you look like as a human?"

Roxas let out a breath and said, "The same, probably. I don't have memories of my past, remember?"

"Oh yeahhhh," Demyx said, squinting. "I think I heard something about that once. Well, don't worry, Roxas. It's not that big a deal. I mean -- who really needs a catalog of every hairstyle they've ever had, right?"

But he looked uncomfortable when he said it, and his gaze slid away.

Roxas flexed his fingers, restless, and said, "Let's just go find the Dual Blade."
