Xenogears: 30_quills

001: No man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks.
This went rather tangential, but it still applies because Miang is... Miang.

A certain quiet fell over the table that Sigurd recognized without needing to turn around. Hyuga's expression was pleasant and plastic, and Jesiah was buried deep in his mug. It was such a careful oblivion that fell over them that he wondered how Kahr could fail to notice.

"Morning, gentlemen. I always feel like I'm arriving late with all of you gathered here before me..." Kahr's hand fell on Sigurd's shoulder amiably and the taller man smiled in reflex, but when his friend swung into view, she was there.

Miang looked serene and delicately beautiful as ever, perfect on Kahr's arm. She nodded at Jesse as she sat beside him, and he tipped his mug in recognition. "That sort of thing happens when everybody but you lives under the same roof," he chuckled. "Suck it up. You'll always be the last to arrive -- or the first."

"That's not true. He'll always arrive with me."

Nobody said anything to that. Hyuga smiled at Miang benevolently; Kahr kissed her forehead. If he recognized that she was the source of everyone's discomfort he gave no sign. Neither did she.

But privately, Sigurd thought she might enjoy it.

Jesiah didn't talk about it, which was admirable restraint on his part, but when they were at home, it was a frequent topic of conversation between his younger friends.

"You feel it too, don't you?" Sigurd would demand. "She's like a death sentence. She sucks all the joy out of everything."

Hyuga would shake his head. "I think that Kahr really thinks that he cares about her," he said, politically. "If I were the sort of person who would wager on the mental state of a near-stranger... I might say that Miang doesn't entertain the same pretense."

Here Billy would make a grab for someone's hair, or tug on a sleeve to remind them that he wanted to be played with, and one of them would idly comfort him. "Do you think she's using him? For her own ambitions?"

"Would it surprise you?"

"No. Brilliance lies ahead of him... anyone can see that."

Breakfast conversation was pleasant and mostly devoid of the little politics and nuisances that comprised daily life in Solaris. Miang was a pleasant addition to their little group and everyone spoke very good-naturedly to and around her. Except for Sigurd.

He tried not to speak to her much. Every time he saw her there, on Kahr's arm, it was all he could do to control the anger.

I say Sigurd should stab her repeatedly and snatch Kahr back. It's not like Kahr ever seems to know what's going on anyway. He needs a push in the right direction *coughs*intoSigurd'sarms*cough*

Mmm. Another lovely fic. Damn you’re good at this. I could actually see them having conversations like that all the time.
