Kingdom Hearts, "We Do Too" (Demyx+Xigbar)

Summary: Demyx wakes up in a new and confusing place as a new and confusing creature. Fortunately, someone is there to give him a helping hand. Demyx coming from Midgar is [livejournal.com profile] laylah. ♥

.we do too.
His is not a face the unsuspecting want to wake up to: scarred, one-eyed, and smirking. Xigbar is no pretty-boy like Zexion, although he likes to think that he's aged well, considering the life he's led.

But he finds the blond kid in the fading afternoon, soaked to the bone and lying half in a river as if he lost consciousness trying to pull himself out. The new Nobody opens his eyes and stares at the figure crouching over him as if he's never seen anything more beautiful.

"Hey," Xigbar says, grinning, "you from Midgar?" He remembers the schedule: Midgar burned this afternoon.

"Oh," says the blond, his eyes filling suddenly with tears. He pets his bedraggled clothing, feeling for injuries, and then, "Oh!," pats Xigbar's face tentatively. Xigbar lets him do it because it amuses him. Then with a wild sound, the blond buries his face in his hands as if he thinks he's going to cry -- although the tears don't come. "I'm alive! I thought for sure-- ahaha-- I was hitting the black things with my sitar, I think I broke it, oh man, but somehow I'm alive--"

Poor kid, Xigbar thinks, not unsympathetic. Although he chose the dark, he can imagine what it's like to wake up after having your heart torn out. "What's your name?" he asks.

"Demyx," he says immediately. Then Demyx looks surprised. He obviously thought he was going to say something else.

Now's the time for the speech. About not having a heart and embracing the darkness and carving a new life out of death. Xemnas had written it all out. It's on a card in Xigbar's pocket.

He's always enjoyed improvising, though, and the kid is just too pitiful for that speech. "Well, don't just sit there crying like a girl," Xigbar says, getting to his feet. "C'mon, Demyx. I'm taking you to The Castle That Never Was. I'll explain on the way, but you're gonna be living there."

Demyx looks extremely intimidated by the name. Damn. He better toughen up before I show him around. "Wait, you'll-- You'll be there too, right? You won't just leave me there or anything, right?" The kid scrambles to his feet and grabs at his hand as if he thinks he can stop Xigbar from shaking him off when he probably weighs about as much as one of Xigbar's guns.

He isn't being reassuring, isn't even being especially nice, and for some reason Demyx is giving him this wide-eyed pleading stare as if trusting him with his life. Maybe new Nobodies are like ducklings: they impress upon the first living thing they see. The only use Xigbar has ever had for ducks is shooting them.

Still it's kind of endearing. "Yeah," Xigbar says, generous. "Don't worry. I wasn't planning on going anywhere." The way Demyx brightens is unmistakable.

When he tells Demyx about being a Nobody, he doesn't mention that they don't have hearts. Let someone else ruin that tentative smile.
