Kingdom Hearts, "We Do Too" (Demyx+Xigbar)
Summary: Demyx wakes up in a new and confusing place as a new and confusing creature. Fortunately, someone is there to give him a helping hand. Demyx coming from Midgar is
laylah. ♥
.we do too.
His is not a face the unsuspecting want to wake up to: scarred, one-eyed, and smirking. Xigbar is no pretty-boy like Zexion, although he likes to think that he's aged well, considering the life he's led.
But he finds the blond kid in the fading afternoon, soaked to the bone and lying half in a river as if he lost consciousness trying to pull himself out. The new Nobody opens his eyes and stares at the figure crouching over him as if he's never seen anything more beautiful.
"Hey," Xigbar says, grinning, "you from Midgar?" He remembers the schedule: Midgar burned this afternoon.
"Oh," says the blond, his eyes filling suddenly with tears. He pets his bedraggled clothing, feeling for injuries, and then, "Oh!," pats Xigbar's face tentatively. Xigbar lets him do it because it amuses him. Then with a wild sound, the blond buries his face in his hands as if he thinks he's going to cry -- although the tears don't come. "I'm alive! I thought for sure-- ahaha-- I was hitting the black things with my sitar, I think I broke it, oh man, but somehow I'm alive--"
Poor kid, Xigbar thinks, not unsympathetic. Although he chose the dark, he can imagine what it's like to wake up after having your heart torn out. "What's your name?" he asks.
"Demyx," he says immediately. Then Demyx looks surprised. He obviously thought he was going to say something else.
Now's the time for the speech. About not having a heart and embracing the darkness and carving a new life out of death. Xemnas had written it all out. It's on a card in Xigbar's pocket.
He's always enjoyed improvising, though, and the kid is just too pitiful for that speech. "Well, don't just sit there crying like a girl," Xigbar says, getting to his feet. "C'mon, Demyx. I'm taking you to The Castle That Never Was. I'll explain on the way, but you're gonna be living there."
Demyx looks extremely intimidated by the name. Damn. He better toughen up before I show him around. "Wait, you'll-- You'll be there too, right? You won't just leave me there or anything, right?" The kid scrambles to his feet and grabs at his hand as if he thinks he can stop Xigbar from shaking him off when he probably weighs about as much as one of Xigbar's guns.
He isn't being reassuring, isn't even being especially nice, and for some reason Demyx is giving him this wide-eyed pleading stare as if trusting him with his life. Maybe new Nobodies are like ducklings: they impress upon the first living thing they see. The only use Xigbar has ever had for ducks is shooting them.
Still it's kind of endearing. "Yeah," Xigbar says, generous. "Don't worry. I wasn't planning on going anywhere." The way Demyx brightens is unmistakable.
When he tells Demyx about being a Nobody, he doesn't mention that they don't have hearts. Let someone else ruin that tentative smile.

...i don't get it.

And besides, Xigbar totally talked to him once. It's fair.

Axel taking care of newbies is asking for trouble. XD

The scene in Hollow Bastion where Sora meets OXIII for the first time makes me think that Xigbar (the one who comes down to talk to Sora) was not only a friendly figure, but familiar enough with their younger members to the point of learning something about them -- he recognizes one of Sora's expressions as being one that Roxas used a lot.

It's just that his appearance doesn't go even vaguely well with his mannerisms, speech, or apparent friendliness. I mean, he looks like one of those guys who would swear at you incoherently while veins bulged in their necks. (Actually I realize I'm especially reminded of that one teacher from Daria for some reason.) But he's not like that at all. He's mellow, and actually seems pretty nice, except for when you fight him and he goes kind of crazy. XD
I'm looking forward to that battle in Proud Mode, where I'll die ten times in three minutes, but at least I'll be able to put his speech from before together with that scene where he appears.

I'm usually curious about what it's like when a Nobody first wakes up. XD What do they think about the things they remember? Their death especially?

*dies* XD
Demyx is so tragic. Killing him was like kicking a puppy. A WET puppy, so he's both pathetic and cute.
...why do all the Organization characters I like compare easily to puppies? Do they discriminate against kittens in Org XIII, or what?

Saix and Marluxia and Roxas all make me think of catlike things. Probably Vexen and Zexion as well.
Although Roxas is still mostly "that kid with the puppy"...

Marluxia is definitely a big fluffy Persian kind of cat.
I really don't know how we were ever supposed to see Demyx as an enemy. XD How Sora could see him as one, I understand, but... Dude!

But seriously, I just want Sora to up and call someone a bitch for once. Tch. DiZzy boy actually got something right with that "too nice for his own good" stuff.

But yeah, just once it would be nice to see Sora say "Screw you, world!" and go do his own thing.

Recently I've gotten inordinately fond of Xigbar, as a result of roleplaying him and talking with friends about him, and his rank and relationships in OXIII, so I love the chance to explore. ^_^

Lovely job! Gen fics are such nice stories to read sometimes.

Demyx needs his eye sight checked. ;) But this line supports Xigbar's theory of impression, no question.
And of course I love. <3 Demyx being from Midgar is kind of sad, though it does give me more excuses for these weird OOC angst vibes I keep getting off of him. (Midgar is just one big nuclear angst cluster. And Cloud lives at its center.) And it seems like his sort of world. The same cyberpunk vibe I got off of Zanarkand in FFX, albeit with less impressive graphics and chibis; and Zanarkand definitely strikes me as a place Demyx could be at home with his sitar and his hair and everything. (For there to be a rockstar, there has to be some environment that seems likely to produce or appreciate one. So, no to Destiny Islands and Hollow Bastion and Traverse Town, the original worlds that all of the other FF characters come from. I mean god. Do you think Destiny Islands even knows what a concert is?)
...
Point is, much love. <3
